My son was saying that there was no school for him on Halloween. I figured it was just the freshman jitters since he mentioned that he heard the upperclassman "egg" the freshman. Can you tell me if this is true?

I will be updating this calendar with much more detail before the end of September. There is school on Halloween Day, October 31 (it is a Wednesday), but the school has early dismissal on that day. Students finish their class day around 2:00 and are dismissed immediately with no after school programs on that day. School safety, school administration, and police are of course on extra alert that day and will be very much present and visible out on 116th Street that afternoon.

Here's more information about Halloween Day from the folks at MCSM. That Wednesday is a regular school day with a regular class schedule. There is no early dismissal that day. Instead, they will have rapid dismissal. Under rapid dismissal, all students must be out of the building within about 10 minutes of the end of 8th period classes, and there are no after school programs or activities. No costumes or masks are permitted to be worn in school that day. In addition, the school safety officers check all student backpacks on the way into the school building in the morning, and students will not be allowed to leave the building for lunch. They must stay in the cafeteria. In the end, parents must decide whether they want to send their children to school, but classes will be meeting that day. For what it's worth, my son went to school on Halloween last year as a 9th grader and encountered no problems. He will be at school again this year on Halloween Day.
